A reaction to the Christchurch massacre on 15th March 2019, where 51 people lost their lives.
A 2019 zine created during my second year at Ilam School of Fine Arts, made in response to the Christchurch mosque shootings on 15 March 2019, in which 51 people were killed.
The work came from feelings of anger, shock, and devastation, and plays with the phrase “they are us” — a phrase widely spoken in New Zealand after the tragedy to express unity and shared humanity.
This zine responds to that phrase by questioning cultural identity, power structures, and what it means to be Pākehā in the aftermath of the attacks.
The 24 page booklet was printed on a paper called White Knight with images appropriated from Christchurch City Council pamphlets, posters and way finding signage, retail mall advertising and drawn from personal images archives.
